Cooking for Ronald McDonald House

Once a month a group of members gather at the Ronald McDonald House to prepare a meal for the families who are temporarily residing there. All of these people have seriously ill children that are being treated at the Evelina Children’s Hospital. Something as simple as returning to a home cooked meal can make a huge difference in their day. It’s a caring touch that is greatly appreciated. We count on the generosity of our members to make these meals a success. There are two ways you can help. Either meet at the House to help prepare the meal and contribute towards the cost of the groceries OR simply make a monetary contribution. There are always supplies we need so whatever donation you are comfortable making we will cheerfully accept!

The Soup Kitchen (and Clothes Closet)

The Soup Kitchen at the American International Church serves meals to homeless and marginally homed men and women. Many of the guests are OAPs – Old Age Pensioners trying to stretch their funds and find companionship to ward off the isolation of being old and alone in London.

The AWC helps by providing volunteers twice a month to prepare and serve food as well as distributing clothing to men and women in need.

Other Ways You Can Help

  • Purchase food store gift cards for the Soup Kitchen, especially Tesco.
  • Shop the Charity Shops, especially outside of London for bargains, for clothes to donate. Men’s jeans and heavy shoes are always welcomed.
  • Do your spring cleaning with an eye toward donating adult clothes in good condition.
  • Make a run to Costco for coffee, tea, sugar, or other non-perishables including large cans of tomatoes, beans, and cooking oil.
  • Purchase something from the Soup Kitchen/Clothes Closet Wish List at Amazon here Amazon

The Doorstep Library

Doorstep Library volunteers bring the wonderful experience of reading directly into the homes of families living in disadvantaged areas every week. Do you remember a character from a childhood book as fondly as an old friend? If you do, you’ll know the magic of being able to slip into an imaginary world, or how books can make your reality a bigger, brighter place. For some children however, reading can be nothing but a chore. That’s why Doorstep Library volunteers don’t just read stories. Turning up on the doorstep with a backpack full of stories, hand-picked for their particular children, they do the silly voices, allow children to read to them, and offer special recommendations. By making it fun first, volunteers witness children’s transformation into budding readers. There are so many different ways to get involved in Doorstep Library; you could join one of their teams in Hammersmith and Fulham, Lambeth or Westminster as a regular reader, or as a substitute reader with projects to suit your schedule. Maybe you’d like to throw a bookish themed fundraiser or pop some leaflets in your favourite local café. Doorstep Library is always looking for people to join their mission to enable as many children as possible to experience the joy of a weekly Doorstep Library visit.

The Ramblers Association

The Weekday Hikes Group collects £1 from every hiker each month to donate to the Rambles Charity. The Ramblers is an association of people and groups who come together to both enjoy walking and other outdoor pursuits and also to protect, maintain and expand the infrastructure of the footpath network in England and Wales. They believe in protecting people's ability to enjoy the intrinsic values of nature and defend the countryside and urban green spaces. Every year the AWC enjoys hundreds of miles of footpaths maintained by the Ramblers --- we aim to support the countryside we value so much.
